Leadership NZ was delighted to be invited by the US Embassy to partner with them and Fulbright NZ to deliver the Tuakana Youth Leadership Mentoring Programme.
The aim of Tuakana is to help guide and develop NZ’s future leaders through personal connections with those who have already started out on the leadership journey.
Twenty Leadership NZ alumni put up their hands to work alongside 20 aspiring leaders (from Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin) to act as wise guides to provide real-world advice and walk alongside the young leaders, and assist them in develop their thinking, focus and ideas about their role as leaders, about their leadership goals and objectives and the leadership impact they want to have.
In early June workshops were held in Wellington and Auckland where the young leaders got to meet up with their Leadership NZ mentors and spend time getting to know each other and to start planning how they would work together for the rest of the year. Leadership NZ’s Network Connector, Judy Whiteman, facilitated the workshops and was blown away by the energy and enthusiasm of everyone. There was general agreement that the mentors would be learning just as much as the mentees! Participants were pleased to be able to meet the US Ambassador, Mark Gilbert (at the Wellington workshop) and US Consul General, Jim Donegan (Auckland workshop).
A special thank you to ACC and Q Theatre for hosting our workshops.
The programme also includes a speaker series facilitated by the Fulbright NZ Alumni and the young leaders will be brought back together later in the year for a capstone event where they will be able to engage in more leadership development activities.
Congratulations to the young leaders who were chosen for the programme and a huge thank you to the Leadership NZ alumni for paying it forward.
