During my third retreat on the NZLP, the marae stay proved to be an incredibly grounding and transformative experience. This is my third marae stay since moving to Aotearoa, 26 years ago. The atmosphere fostered a profound sense of trust and vulnerability, allowing me to relax and open myself to growth. As a result, I found myself both awakened and rooted in a way I had not experienced before.
One of the most eye-opening aspects of the retreat was the visit to Waitangi Treaty Grounds, where I learned about the Treaty of Waitangi and its historical significance. The interactions between indigenous Māori and early European settlers highlighted the complexities of colonisation. It made me reflect on the heartbreak of colonisation, not only in the context of New Zealand but also in the broader context of India's colonial history.
Colonialism was undoubtedly a traumatising experience for colonial subjects, far more than their colonisers. The profound impact of colonisation on indigenous cultures and societies, including the Māori in New Zealand and various communities in India, cannot be understated. The suffering encompassed poverty, malnutrition, disease, cultural upheaval, economic exploitation, political disadvantage, and the systematic implementation of programs aimed at perpetuating a sense of social and racial inferiority.
Learning about these historical realities, such as in our Te Tiriti o Waitangi Workshop with Kathryn McKenzie, deepened my understanding of the long-lasting consequences of colonial actions. It reinforced the importance of acknowledging and respecting the experiences of those who have endured the brunt of colonialism's consequences and the importance of learning the non-tourist version of the Treaty. As a leader, this knowledge reminds me of the responsibility to promote inclusivity, diversity, and cultural sensitivity in all aspects of leadership.
Throughout the retreat, I felt a profound connection with my peers. The camaraderie, laughter, and joy we shared created a supportive and welcoming environment. The cohesion of the cohort was evident in the genuine care and teamwork displayed by each member. This sense of togetherness not only made the experience special but also familiar, like being part of a second family.
Moreover, the retreat has awakened my mind to new possibilities and ideas. The combination of trust, vulnerability, and learning has provided a unique space for personal growth and self-discovery. I now feel better equipped to embrace leadership challenges with a grounded and rooted mindset.
This retreat has been a profound journey of growth, introspection, and historical awareness, which has enriched my perspective as a leader. The connections, laughter, joy, love, teamwork, and care shared with my cohort and ako have reinforced the importance of a supportive community. I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of this transformative journey, and I am eager to apply these newfound insights to my leadership approach in both personal and professional realms.
